Today nearly every aspect of our lives are connected in some way to technology including our security. Our reliance and how quickly live crumbles was clearly demonstrated on Friday 19th of July when a computer software update by the company Crowdstrike bought large sections of the world including many large companies, government bodies including the US cybersecurity unit and all who use this software on Microsoft machines to a halt. This affected over 8 billion devices and resulted in thousands of flights being cancelled, banks closing, people unable to pay for groceries and even some being locked out of their fridge.

What Happened: Incident Overview On July 19, 2024, at 04:09 UTC, a Rapid Response Content update for the Falcon sensor was published to Windows hosts running sensor version 7.11 and above. This update was to gather telemetry on new threat techniques observed by CrowdStrike, but triggered crashes (BSOD) on systems that were online between 04:09 and 05:27 UTC. Geopolitical Instability Raises Threat of ‘Catastrophic Cyberattack in Next Two Years’
Davos, Switzerland, 18 January 2023– Geopolitical instability is exacerbating the risk of catastrophic cyberattacks, according to the Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2023 report, which was launched today at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2023 in Davos. Over 93% of cybersecurity experts and 86% of business leaders believe “a far-reaching, catastrophic cyber event is likely in the next two years” and there is a critical skills gap that is threatening societies and key infrastructure.
The Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2023 findings were based on surveys, workshops and interviews with over 300 experts and C-suite executives. Half of the companies surveyed said the current landscape is making them re-evaluate the countries in which their organization does business.
Despite challenges, organizations are improving cyber resilience, one of the key priorities of the World Economic Forum’s Centre for Cybersecurity. The report, written in collaboration with Accenture, says that awareness and preparation will help organizations balance the value of new technology against the cyber risk that comes with it. UK could be brought to a halt ‘at any moment’ by cyberattack, report warns
The Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy says that large swathes of critical infrastructure are vulnerable to ransomware attacks.
13 December 2023: The UK is unprepared for a large-scale ransomware attack and “at any moment” could be brought to a standstill, a new report says.
Parliament’s Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy (JCNSS) said responsibility for tackling ransomware attacks should be taken off the Home Office – which the report accuses of giving political priority to other issues – and given to the Cabinet Office and overseen directly by the deputy prime minister.
The report claimed former home secretary Suella Braverman “showed no interest” in the issue and instead focused on illegal migration and small boats. Read more…

Biden warns Russian cyberattacks ‘coming’
The president tells companies to immediately harden defenses against potential Russian cyberattacks.
March 2022: President Joe Biden on Monday warned of Russian cyberattacks against the U.S. — making his most prominent alert yet about what he called new intelligence concerning the Putin regime’s plans.
“The more Putin’s back is against the wall, the greater the severity of the tactics he may employ … one of the tools he’s most likely to use in my view, in our view, is cyberattacks,” Biden said on Monday.
“The magnitude of Russia’s cyber capacity is fairly consequential and it’s coming,” he continued.
Biden had earlier issued a statement saying that the administration is reiterating earlier warnings, “based on evolving intelligence that the Russian Government is exploring options for potential cyberattacks.”
Past U.S. intelligence warnings about the timing and manner of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine were largely accurate. Biden urged companies to “harden your cyber defenses immediately.” Read more…

Clinton: Treat cyberattacks ‘like any other attack’
August 2016: Hillary Clinton on Wednesday called for the U.S. to begin treating cyberattacks like any other assault on the country.
“As president, I will make it clear that the United States will treat cyberattacks just like any other attack,” the Democratic presidential nominee said. “We will be ready with serious political, economic and military responses.”
Clinton called for the U.S. to “lead the world in setting the rules in cyberspace.”
“If America doesn’t, others will,” she said.
The remarks, given during a foreign policy speech at the American Legion Convention in Cincinnati, address one the central challenges the Obama administration has faced in responding to cyberattacks.
Without any international rules of engagement, officials must weigh a response to each attack individually — with the result being that the White House has often been accused of not having an adequate deterrence strategy.
Critics say that a lack of policy has muted government responses to incidents such as the massive hack of the Office of Personnel Management, which Chinese hackers are believed to have carried out. Read more…

U.S. government suffers major national security breach, the consequences of which could be devastating
July 24, 2024: Some of federal government’s potentially most sensitive national security-related files are now in the hands of an unknown entity likely to put them up for sale.
It’s being reported by Bloomberg and others today that one of the largest IT service providers to the U.S. military-industrial complex has experienced a major cybersecurity breach.
The company targeted is not a household name. But Leidos Holdings Inc. is known for its extensive work with the Pentagon, NASA, Homeland Security as well as other federal agencies and defense contractors. Leidos was the largest federal IT contractor in fiscal year 2022 with $4 billion in services under contract.
Now it has been breached.
Hackers leaked internal documents, raising concerns about the security of sensitive government data managed by not only Leidos but other third-party contractors as well.
According to Cyber Security News, clients served by Leidos include the Defense Department, the Department of Homeland Security, NASA, other U.S. and foreign agencies, and private corporations. Contracts with the U.S. government constitute 87% of Leidos’ revenue.
