The Nasdaq 100 is set for its biggest opening drop in more than four years, as investors bracing for days of volatility amid rising concerns over a slowing US economy and overheated gains in the tech sector. How the Global Market Crash Affects Us Even If We Aren’t Invested in the Stock Market
Some folks are calling August 5, 2024 “Black Monday 2.0.” It could be remembered as the day when the global market crash began in earnest.
The following should not be considered financial advice. If you are looking for financial advice, I recommend speaking to an expert who is not vested in the stock market system. I’m just explaining what has been explained to me in the clearest way possible.
Some background on the global market crash
While we in America were still sleeping, in Japan, the stock market there was crashing. Traders has been borrowing against the yen at 0% and investing that money elsewhere. Then, rates went up. Suddenly they were upside down in their investments, which means they owed more than the investments were worth. Stocks fell further and further throughout the day. The Japanese market, the Nikkei, crashed 4,451.28 points – its largest-ever loss in terms of points.
It didn’t take long for the carnage to spread across Asia. South Korea and Taiwan also hit historic lows.
Sure.
In other Monday news, the tech sector, particularly the “Magnificent Seven” (Alphabet/Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Tesla) all saw a plunge in value, with a slight recovery later in the day. All in all, these tech stocks lost $653 billion on Monday. But this closely follows a $744 billion decline on July 24, so it’s not good news. Before you go start a joint Go-Fund-Me for Bezos and Zuckerberg, rest assured, they still have plenty of money. It’s the folks whose retirement funds are invested into Big Tech who need to worry.
There are other factors in play here: a bad jobs report on Friday (they can’t hide the truth forever), Google was declared a monopoly by courts, people are beginning to doubt whether there’s any money in AI, and Warren Buffet’s decision to cut his Apple holdings in half. Fears of a recession are greater than ever.
Bitcoin, long considered a safe haven, also fell on Monday, losing 15% of its value. Ethereum, another cryptocurrency, lost 22%. BNB, Solana, Dogecoin, XRP, Shiba Inu, and Cardano are all down between 16% and 18%. Read more…

Military in control of Bangladesh after longtime ruler flees, EU calls for ‘calm’
Bangladesh’s military was in control of the country on Tuesday (6 August) after mass protests forced longtime ruler Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee.
Hasina, 76, had been in power since 2009 but was accused of rigging elections in January and then watched millions of people take to the streets over the past month demanding she step down.
Hundreds of people died as security forces sought to quell the unrest, but the protests grew and Hasina finally fled Bangladesh aboard a helicopter on Monday as the military turned against her.
Bangladesh army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced Monday afternoon on state television that Hasina had resigned and the military would form a caretaker government.
“The country has suffered a lot, the economy has been hit, many people have been killed — it is time to stop the violence,” said Waker, shortly after jubilant crowds stormed and looted Hasina’s official residence.
Millions of Bangladeshis flooded the streets of Dhaka after Waker’s announcement.
“I feel so happy that our country has been liberated,” said Sazid Ahnaf, 21, comparing the events to the independence war that split the nation from Pakistan more than five decades ago.
“We have been freed from a dictatorship. It’s a Bengal uprising, what we saw in 1971, and now seeing in 2024.”
But there were also scenes of chaos and anger, with police reporting at least 66 people killed on Monday as mobs launched revenge attacks on Hasina’s allies.
Protesters stormed parliament and torched TV stations, while some smashed statues of Hasina’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s independence hero.
Others set a museum dedicated to the former leader on fire, flames licking at portraits in destruction barely thinkable just hours before, when Hasina had the loyalty of the security forces under her autocratic grip.
“The time has come to make them accountable for torture,” said protester Kaza Ahmed. “Sheikh Hasina is responsible for murder.”
Offices of Hasina’s Awami League across the country were torched and looted, eyewitnesses told AFP.
The unrest began last month in the form of protests against civil service job quotas and then escalated into wider calls for Hasina to stand down.
Her government was accused by rights groups of misusing state institutions to entrench its hold on power and stamp out dissent, including through the extrajudicial killing of opposition activists.

WHO identifies 30 pathogens with pandemic potential, including bird flu, dengue fever, and monkeypox
Some of the most dangerous include H5N1 bird flu, which is spreading in the US and could possibly mutate to spread between humans. Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne illness known as the ‘bone-breaking disease,’ is also spreading in the US at unprecedented levels. Additionally, monkeypox, which led to a global outbreak in 2022, is on the list due to a more dangerous and infectious strain spreading in Africa.
More than half of the pathogens on the new list are new compared to the 2017 list, DailyMail reported. The updated list also includes Hantavirus, which spreads among rodents, the mosquito-borne West Nile Virus, flu, and Covid.
Smallpox is also on the list, even though it is currently wiped out, due to the risk of it being accidentally released from a lab and spreading quickly since few people have immunity. The list also features Lassa fever, a rodent-borne illness that can cause severe symptoms like bleeding and seizures.
Compiled by 200 scientists from over 50 countries, the list was created after reviewing 1,600 bacteria and viruses. Pathogens marked as having ‘pandemic potential’ are those that are highly transmissible. And are capable of causing serious disease in humans. The most dangerous diseases are those with no available vaccines or treatments.
The pathogens were selected for their high transmissibility and virulence, as well as the limited availability of vaccines and treatments. The new list features several strains of influenza A viruses, five new bacterial strains, and the Nipah virus, which has recently been detected in India.

A draft law in Iraq that would allow the marriage of girls as young as nine has provoked protests across the country, with women’s rights activists saying it would “legalise child rape”.
The Shia religious groups that dominate the political system in Iraq have been pushing to erode women’s rights in the country for more than a decade.
Unlike neighbouring Saudi Arabia, Iraq does not have a system of male guardianship requiring women to have the permission of a husband, father or male guardian to make crucial life choices such as marriage.
However, a new proposal, which passed its first reading in the Iraqi parliament this week, would give religious authorities the power to decide on family affairs, including marriage, divorce and the care of children
“This is a catastrophe for women,” said Raya Faiq, who is the coordinator for a coalition of groups which are opposing the law change. The group includes some Iraqi MPs.
“My husband and my family oppose child marriage. But imagine if my daughter gets married and my daughter’s husband wants to marry off my granddaughter as a child. The new law would allow him to do so. I would not be allowed to object. This law legalises child rape.”
During protests organised by the coalition this week in the capital, Baghdad, and in several other cities in Iraq, supporters of the new law confronted opponents and accused them of “moral decadence” and “following western agendas”.
Although Iraq has outlawed marriage under the age of 18 since the 1950s, one survey by the UN children’s agency, Unicef, found that 28% of girls in Iraq had married before they reached the age of 18. Read more…

Ohana Hope Village Is Finally Opening To Maui Fire Survivors
Access to water is still in flux, but the Maui modular home housing project now has county approval to open 16 of 88 units.
Lahaina resident Michele Fernandez has spent the last several months living with her family in an enclosed carport in Central Maui, courtesy of church friends.
Late Friday afternoon, Fernandez learned that she, her husband and two sons, ages 18 and 22, will be able to move into a pair of modular homes at Ohana Hope Village in Kahului on Wednesday.
After months of delay, the village — a collection of 88 modular homes that Family Life Center erected near the airport — finally received a much-needed permit from the Maui Department of Public Works. Read more…
Victims fear $4B settlement will hide accountability as Maui wildfire investigations continue
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The $4 billion proposed settlement over Maui wildfires is raising questions about accountability.
Two major investigations into the fire and government response are still not complete, so, some victims wonder if the truth will ever come out.
When the settlement was announced Friday, Hawaiian Electric revealed immediately that it was paying about half of the $4 billion. The governor later said the state would pay another 20 percent% — about $800 million.
But for some, that raises questions about whether the payments have any connection to the level of responsibility for the disaster.
In December, Sanford Hill was demanding answers when he showed Hawaii News Now the remains of his apartment at Hale Mahaolu elderly housing. The quick settlement has him worried he’ll never learn the truth.
“They want to settle it before the AG report comes out. ATF report comes out before the truth comes out, and this is a way to do that,” Hill said.
The Maui Fire Department and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms are looking into the cause and progress of the fire, and the Attorney General into the response of government agencies.
Hill and others are asking how the lawsuits can be settled without knowing who was liable.
“You know, they’ve done a real good job of avoiding the responsibility. Nobody has been held accountable,” he said.
State Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole, Consumer Protection Committee Chair, said a settlement is the best outcome for everyone, but also wants to see accountability.
“That’s ultimately what the lawsuits are about,” he said. “They’re about making victims whole to the best extent possible, but they’re also about making sure that the irresponsible actions that caused the fire never happen again.”
Keohokalole said the Legislature will review the $800 million being promised by the state, which he said seems higher than its liability for fire damage and injury.
“It raises a lot of questions, because again, our understanding from the Governor’s administration is that the state would prevail if sued,” he said. “So why this number? What is it for?”
Maui Attorney Jan Apo, who represents hundreds of fire victim families, said settlements often don’t track actual levels of responsibility. Read more…

A federal judge ruled on Monday Google violated antitrust laws in a bid to maintain a monopoly with its search engine—a major loss for Google, capping off the latest antitrust case brought against a U.S. tech giant.
D.C.-based Judge Amit Mehta wrote “Google is a monopolist” and “has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” in an opinion siding with the Department of Justice and 11 states.
In his ruling, Mehta stated Google exercises monopoly power over product markets, uses exclusive distribution agreements and charges “supracompetitive prices for general search text ads,” which Mehta argues has led to “anticompetitive behavior.”
